Cassel, Germany,
May 30, 1890
We started on our journey yesterday noon. Almost the whole family came to the stattion- thirteen in all. they gave me a lovely bouquet of lililes (sic), and Miss Swan a pretty one of Sea France rose & other flowers.
Yesterday we visited Wilhelmshohe (William Heights)- 1364 ft above the river here. We climbed the 642 steps leading to a stone building (Hercules) at the top from which we obtained a wonderful view. We were in the woods- which is a beautiful garden, about 5 hours- The whole mts. are laid out with picturesque drives & walks – fountains, bridges, cascades-waterfalls, and a castle, etc. I have never before seen anything so beautiful. This morning we were in t;he ? garden, – a most beautiful place. We leave here in about twenty minutes for Eisenach, where we are to visit the castle- the Weilburg (?)- where ____? was confined. From Eisenach Saturday morning we expect to go to Munich, from there I will write you again. We expect to spend Sunday there. Very much love, from Harriett E.
