In Germany/ VE Day (unknown to him)
Dear Dad, – I received your letter of April 25th in quick time. My letters to you apparently are not doing as well. I have received all the letters that you have written since mid-Winter and have been glad to receive them. They are always so optimistic with regard to the war even though from my own point of view things may not look so good. Well you are bound to be right sooner or later and it looks as though the happy day is in sight when there will be an end of fighting over here. I have been interested in the San Fran Conference (re; organizing the United Nations) and hope that the many problems that confront all nations can be solved without bitterness and dissatisfaction.
Although there have been several days of chill rain, today has been pleasant. It is much warmer also, as we are down in lower land than we were in last week. To our astonishment, we had several inches of snow on May 1st, but we were in a mountainous country then. It was pretty country, and the town we occupied was a health resort with several hospitals and places for people to rest. It looked as though it had been used recently as a hospital town by the German Army – The meadows are very colorful. Yellow, especially, predominates as the dandelions are very plentiful. There are also numerous other flowers. Lots of love to you all, Carl
