France (D-Day+81)
Dead Dad,
I guess you will wonder what has been happening since I last wrote. As you know there is little that I can say about my activities. That must wait. You can rest assured that everything is O.K. with me and that I am still interested in my travels under army supervision. – Our men have been welcomed generally by the people. They express their feelings by cheers, tossing flowers and treating us to food and drink. I have talked a bit with some of them particularly children. Some of them appear to have such nice manners. One experience would interest you, I think. I went into a small village, bought a loaf of bread (three feet long) and went into a shop where I had cider and slices of bread with local fresh butter right out of a large bowl provided by the old lady who ran the shop. There was another soldier with me. We still have some of the bread left and probably never will finish it. – The weather is both rainy and sunny in turn and rather warm: I have had no letters recently as we have not had mail call for several days. It will come eventually. – Lots of love to all. Carl
