France: Cool weather / camping out / 91st Psalm

Dear Aunt Harriett,                                                                                          Sunday

I have been informed by Rena, Dad + Justine of the intense hot spell you had during August.  The weather here has been cool for several weeks with rain almost every day.  Now, the nights are quite chilly + damp, and I am wearing winter underwear and sometimes overcoat.  Life in the field is rough, but not bad providing we have pleasant weather. Bodily comfort is an item that we all are striving for, but not always attaining.  I can truthfully say however, that I have kept comfortable so far.  Today I attended service- The chaplain read the 91st Psalm for a text.  I had that little leather-bound copy of the Book of Psalms you gave me, in my pocket, and  followed with it.  By some strange coincidence the book marker rested on that page (at 91st Psalm). sic  The service was very simple.  The chaplain had made an altar out of the hood of his “jeep” and administered communion from it.  Service took place in a little (censored) and the sun shone on the men seated on the ground.  It was quite an experience.  Write soon.

Lots of love to you and Aunt Polly (Harriett’s sister)   Regards to Bill (Polly’s husband) –  Carl
