Sesame Street Live®
I’m at the Flynn today, doing projection on Sesame Street Live®. This production company is notoriously cheap. The do not want to pay for labor, so as to increase their profits, of course. So they do not put projectionists on the call. On this tour the sound guy also does their projection, and while he usually works alone, today he had the Flynn’s head sound guy, HarryC and myself as MProj. He didn’t know what to do with himself with all this help.
Their projector is pre-rigged in a cage, it just gets bolted right onto the truss, and the data and power cables are pre-bundled. This show usually goes into arenas and other huge venues, so they have to make it up when they come into a ‘tiny’ 1400 seat house, like the Flynn.
Their production company really does try to make it foolproof, so that they can hire fools to run it, because work cheap. When I came in I asked the head guy about the details for projection and he laughed and said that our BA was talking to the production manager about trying to send me home before I did a lick of work. A minute later I saw our BA and he said don’t worry, they can’t do the show if they don’t hire ALL of the crew. The house isn’t sold out, but it’s almost full. We have a matinee tomorrow and another evening show, before load-out.
So we are at intermission. They are going through the house selling Elmo® balloons to the kiddies. They are everywhere you look, and the seller has a huge wad of them.
My back was really hurting today, and I was helping unload the trucks (two 18-wheelers of gak). I could barely carry even moderate weights. I couldn’t bend, so it was hard to put things down.
And I was just in Burlington last night for our union meeting! It didn’t even occur to me to stay, I went all the way home. Tonight I am staying at Dad’s house.
Well the show just came back from the break. It’s time for Elmo’s World®.
