Pathfinder not happy with VT winters

Mom’s 1996 pathfinder is not enjoying Vermont winters.  Oh, it starts OK, that is when the starter finally engages. But the exhaust manifold gasket leak is really loud because the cold has contracted the metal parts more than usual, the shift button is sticky and doesn’t want to depress properly, and the tires really aren’t snow tires so it is extremely difficult to drive on any snowy surface.

Well now there is a new problem.  A couple days ago the turn signal was on, and when I pressed the brake, the blinking stopped blinking and both dashboard turn signal lights lit up at 50% level.  When I let go the brake it all acted normally.  Stephanie reported that this morning it’s a lot worse. Turning on any turn signal now acts like you have the hazard lights switch on and all braking makes that turn signal lights come on at 50%.

This is our only working car…

UPDATE:

I had an insight about this. A lot of search results are links to websites about trailers and Kay’s Pathfinder has a trailer hitch on it!  Now it’s 6 PM and the sun has set and it’s 7˚ outside already.  So I’ll look at it tomorrow.
