My Dad, the Extra
I’ve been working for Skip Blumberg, one of the original Video Freaks of the early ’70s when 3/4″ porta-packs first came out. He’s directing an episode of Great Performances for PBS on the world-class juggler Michael Moschen.
Today was our first shoot for the opening sequence where Michael is walking around NYC juggling and wowing the crowd. Today we were on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum on 5th Ave. Actually we weren’t allowed on the steps and had to be satisfied with the plaza at the bottom of the steps.
Anyway I had my dad come down and be in the crowd of people watching the juggler.
Call time was 8:30, crowd was 10:30 – noon. We shot in the afternoon by the fountains.
The opening sequence was shot on BetaSP.
When I finally saw the footage my dad was placed on the edge of the crowd and is only visible for a few seconds.
But looking at the video clip now it starts out with ME. I’m the guy with the video camcorder, then I saw my dad, and there’s Karen Wakeley, my friend (and college sweatheart).
