Mount Washington – Day 2

It only rained a little bit, but it was like the time we brought the German kids up there. in the cloud, about 50 feet of visibility, 40 MPH wind, enough moisture inside the car to start dripping off of the overhead hardware.  We opened both front doors and watched the cloud go through the car.  Olivia and Errol made drawings on the windows.  During one of the roll call check-ins Errol kept saying he wanted to talk on the radio, so when it was my turn to report I mentioned the weather and how the kids were drawing on the windows, I put the mic in front of Errol and he said, “I made a dinosaur”, then I held the mic to Olivia and she said, “I made a dragon.” It was fun.

The summit was socked in, we wandered around the museum gift shop for a while, then went up onto the roof where I try to contact anyone a hundred miles away. This time I found someone on the Bolton repeater.  He was on Lake Champlain in a sailboat, with plenty of sun – but no wind! I had no sun and lots of wind!  After that Errol and Olivia and I went up to the summit and I had him stand on the USGS medallion.  I didn’t have a camera, boo hoo.  We went into TipTop House for a break, then headed down.

We stopped at Nelson Crag since we didn’t get to hike on the summit.  We walked out to the promontory and looked over the beautiful valley.  Errol took in the view and said, “I think this was made in China!”  I laughed and said, “No, it was made right here in New Hampshire.”

The kids stood up in the sun roof for the drive down. About every 15th vehicle waved and laughed.  The kids had a great time.

At about 3 miles I turn a corner and coming up the hill is a state trooper with his blue lights on!  I thought he was here for me, but he went right on by.  When I got to the bottom the Goreham ambulance was pulling in.  I have the road crew freqs in my radio, so I tuned in to figure out what was happening. A 52 year old Harley rider dropped his bike on Hairpin turn, right on his leg. The Road Crew wouldn’t let the ambulance up the hill because it’s too heavy, so they sent up an empty stage to bring the guy down.

I took Route 2 all the way from Dolly Copp to West Danville.  Boring drive.  I have to remember not to do that again.

All in all, it was a 12 hour day on 4 hours sleep.
