The Re•Bops at ECHO Center
A long day with two video shoots. We all got up at 7 AM, Steph took the kids in the Volvo to WGDR for their kid’s show. Steph had had a conversation with a mom at the Marshfield community dinner about her and her boy coming to the radio station, and so this morning she did. Audrey was pestiferous so She was banished from the control room and Steph sat the boy down at a mic and he and Olivia had a great conversation together.
I got equipment ready at home and then drove the van to the Hardwick office and got my camera and sound gear. I was 20 minutes late getting the family at ‘GDR, and so we were going to be late getting to ECHO. Our plan had been that I would get to ‘GDR by 10:15, the show ended at 10:30, but I didn’t get there until 10:45, or so.
We headed up to Burlington at a rapid pace and were only about 10 minutes late, which was the perfect time, actually. Finn was already there and he helped me get all my gear into the place. We took the elevator up to the third level and I started setting up right away.
Diana lent me her DLSR for another video source, and I brought my still camera to use as an0ther source. We had four cameras going. Olivia came out in the Purple People Eater costume and they did that song. Later Audrey dressed up as Dorothy, c0mplete with ‘ruby red’ slippers, and did a song.
It was over before I knew it! I left my big camera on a wide shot and handheld my still camera and moved all around. It will be interesting to cut the two big cameras, mine and Finn’s, and Diana’s DSLR and my Nikon. I know already the gamma curves are all over the place. I am really happy about Finn, his camera is a match to mine (not exactly of course, but closer then my Nikon!
Once we loaded out we wanted to go see the Chinese body exhibit, but since we didn’t pay to get into ECHO, we would have had to pay almost $20 each! So we went to Big Daddy’s for pizza. I took the kids in and told Steph to go to the recently opened El Gato Cantina. She got to have a ‘grown up’ meal by herself, and she had a margarita on the rocks. I love my woman.
By the time we headed home it was 3 PM. I made arrangements with Finn to meet us at Cabot at 5:15. By the time we got gas for the van and got home at 5:10, he was already there. He had a Prius which was a loaner car while they replaced the frame on his pickup truck. What a strange car the Prius is. I had thought I wanted one, but now I am not so sure.
Finn and I drove over to Bethlehem, NH for the evening show. We got in and set up. We found out that the one song we were there to record was in the second set, so we sat with Diana in the front row and watched the first show. The gig was this: 9 years ago one of Diana’s Wee•Bops, Annilie, sang a song with this band, the Bellville Cadillacs, and it was recorded on video. Diana wanted a new version with the same girl singing in front of the same band. But now she’s 18 and gorgeous!
During the break we heard that the song we wanted was now second on the set list. So I got the two still cameras rolling and we shot the song. And we stuck around to get the final number where Diana and Annilie got up on stage with the woman that refurbished the theater we were in. It was great.
I didn’t get home until 12:30 AM and Finn had another hour of driving.
