1915 – Harry, Jr.

During the War Mom worked for the Veterans Benefit Administration, a Government Agency. She was given a certificate of Merit for her services. Mom had a maid we called ìMaryî to care for the children while she was away. Mary was a part of our family. She fed us and cared for us for a number of years. We all have a ìfeelingî for her, even though we donít remember many details.

One day Malcolm and I were playing in Rock Creek Park, and we wanted to go out to an island in the Creek. In order to get there we would have to wade. So, I took off my shoes and threw them toward the island. I missed, and they were brand new. I have no recollection of being punished.

When Dad came borne from his trips overseas he would hire a limosine, and the whole family would go on a sight seeing trip around the city. It seemed to be a way of having the whole family together, looking at the sights of the familiar city that he had grown up In and loved so well.
