May 23,1918 – At Sea
Beatiful morning – A great sight this A.M. when I came on deck, our fleet of 23 ships was surrounded by 6 English destroyers and pretty soon 4 *********** came along – at about 9 o’clock two more English boats. A kind of destroyer came and asked if we were the Culgoa then told us to leave the convoy and head for Queesntown. Each took station, one of starboard, the other port, and we hit(?) it up at 11 knots for Queenstown. Will reach there in the morning ‘Maybe’.
Had a wireless this AM that a ‘sub’ got a ship off the Ligand(?). another this PM that they got one in the Mediterranian.
The Paymaster and Doctor wore their Ever Ready suits, the Paymaster carrying a life belt around with him, ****** when one of his Yeomen have none. He says he is going to sleep in Pay office tonight. Has his Ever Ready and a life belt and the **** ***** and sleeping or laying down with all his clothes on. Gee, I almost wish we would be sunk, just to show him up.
