May 13, 1918 – At Sea

Monday, at sea.  Long 55.14, Lat 40.08, Dist 226 miles.

We dragged target for ocoma to shoot at target only 300 yards astern.  She fired 5″ shells and schrapnell. Some of the shots fell close to the ship and one whistled over our heads. He Capt. signaled to them and they didn’t shoot any more schrapnell. We had quite a scare about noon. One of the ships sounded ‘sub’ signal, and l***d and ran(?). We went to ‘General Quarters’ and pretty soon the other ship commenced to shoot. Finally we discovered she was having target practice, and we had heard the ‘sub’ signal.

8:20 PM Ship has just stopped. Another scare. The sea today has been wonderful, as smooth as glass. A great sight. 23 of us steaming along. Here(?) we would be  good picking for the ****.

We get the Press(?) reports each day by wireless from Arlington. They are received at noght and type-written copies are on the breakfast table.
