1892 – Baltimore

I believe that after Charlotte Hall, he went to Baltimore and attended Baltimore Polytechnical Institute, where he got his Engineering degree.

After graduation, he returned to Washington D. C, to look for work. This effort took him to Fredricksburg, Virginia, where there was a shoe factory. He made his appearance in the morning and was greeted by the owner who was wearing riding boots and bloomer type riding pants, and carrying a riding crop, and the engineer in charge of the plant.

They spent the morning examining the plant and when lunch time arrived the plant was closed down and the men left. Harry was told that there was no job there for him. He insisted that there was a need for him at the plant. He insisted that he could make it more efficient, more productive and more profitable.

When the men returned from the noon hour, the engineer in charge tried to start up the plant. It would not start. He searched all over for the cause, he could find nothing wrong. Finally, Harry said that he could fix it and that he knew what was wrong. The owner and the engineer, of course scorned him. Finally he convinced them that he should try, if there was to be any production that afternoon.

Harry went right to the problem. Corrected the situation. It was decided that they would continue their talk in the morning. So far, he had not told them that he had maneuvered the whole matter. The next day a hurricane destroyed the plant.
