1875 – Robt. Middleton in Colombia

There came a time when Robert Isaac went to Baranquilla, Columbia, South America, as an engineer to build the railway between that city and Bogata.

Two events occurred down there that have been relayed to me:

The first, was that on one occasion when Grandad and a party working for the railroad were riding horseback up a jungle trail, the horses stepped over what they thought was a log. However, when they returned it was gone. Then what started out as a work party became a hunting party. Eventually, they found a Boa Constrictor, which, if my memory serves me, and I was properly informed, was about thirty feet long.

The other event that I recall, was that my Uncle Edward contracted yellow fever, and died. He is buried somewhere near Baranquilla.

While Granddad was in Columbia, Little Harry was sent to Baltimore to stay with his Uncle Rufus There were times when Dad and Uncle Rufus did not agree. On some of these occasions violence broke out and Uncle Rufus took his cane to the boy, who in turn, took to his heels. Some of the houses in Baltimore have narrow alleys between them, and such was the case in the house where Uncle Rufus lived. Much to his consternation and frustration, “Little Harry” would spread his hands and feet between the two buildings, and climb up beyond the reach of Uncle Rufus and his cane. He would stand there and yell at him and flail his cane. I believe that Dad probably negotiated a peace treaty before he would come down, however, I have no recollection of being told the “after story”.
