May 8, 1918 – USS Culgoa

Left the dock at 10:30 and reached Gravesend Bay 12n. **** we are to take on the ammunition here.

The sloppy way this tub is run now is sickening. 3 men were granted 24 hour leave from noon yesterday and all the officers knew we would leave the dock at 10 AM.

Loading the dabth bombs some job. The lighter alongside is jumping about and the winch men slam the things against the hatches all hands are ki*** ma****.

Tonight while the men were loading 3 “ammunition into the magazines which is under the ward rooms. One box let go and crashed into the ward room, breaking and the shells from there to the other dock – some close call. I had a f**y future(?) for a minute.  If they had exploded I guess they would have started the debth bombs and good night.

15 tons blew up the city of Halifax and we have 45 tons on board.
